Teach Your Children Well
Crosby, Stills and Nash recorded this song in the 1970’s. It was a truly different lyric for its time. This was the time of “free love” and “if it feels good, do it” philosophies, not an unwelcome “look at yourself” and “what your life is teaching” concept. But there it was, a sermon in song title. The concept is certainly Biblical. 1. Jesus taught “God’s children” by His example throughout H... read all »
Sound Bites
Many years ago, although to me it doesn’t seem so long, I worked as a program director and disc jockey at a radio station in Missouri. There was always a radio on, as our “on air broadcast went throughout the radio station. Every room, (even the restrooms) had a speaker to hear what was going out to the public. Most of the time no one ever really listened - unless there was a mistake. Let something or someone “mess up” and it was like ligh... read all »
If Christianity were a political candidate...
If, for the sake of discussion, Christianity were a political candidate, what would be its platform? Would it champion human life as being sacred, precious, and in the image of God? Or would it let each individual decide if human life was of any value or pertainence? If Christianity were a political candidate would it be more concerned about the varying economy or the growing ungodliness of our society? If Christianity were a political candidate, would it ... read all »
A Sad Story
A short time ago my mother and I made a trip to Texas to say goodbye to my uncle Ralph. He had followed his father’s example, and his Heavenly Father’s command, by trying to serve the Lord all his life as a minister of the Gospel. After an operation to relieve bleeding on his brain, he was losing the battle to blood clots throughout his body and was in his last days. Even though he could not speak, he still acknowledged his joy to see my mother and I by ... read all »
Audrey Hepburn’s Beauty Tips
My sister, Vickie sent this to me and asked me to share this beautiful woman’s message with her special Oklahoma ladies and give them her love… so I will. (Ditto from me also) It is a wonderful poem written by Audrey Hepburn when she was asked to share her ‘beauty tips’. It was read at her funeral, years later. I think it falls in line with scripture, (I stuck in some examples). So to our beautiful ladies and those enjoying a make-over, ... read all »
How Busy Are You?
“I am flat worn out! It’s all I can do, trying to make a living, and my wife wants this and that, my children have to go here or there, they need this and that; they have sports and school activities that take up my time. The only “free time” I have seems to be spent on nursing my aches and pains. Just watching my grandchildren makes me tired; they are so full of energy. I’m just much too tired… I’m “spread much too t... read all »
Little Mammas
Being privileged to go visiting a few Sundays ago, I attended church in Springfield with our brothers and sisters there. I sat behind a young mother with 3 very active sons. They appeared to be in an age range from 3 to 6 years. She struggled valiantly to keep them quiet and occupied during the service. You could tell she was doing her best to keep her ‘brood’ from disturbing or distracting anyone’s worship. I was very empathetic toward her prob... read all »
Franklin’s Stove
We are all familiar with cold weather and the demands it puts upon us in so many ways. But, if you had lived in the mid-eighteenth century, the only way to heat your home was with a fireplace. They were not very efficient. Most of the heat escaped up the chimney or through the walls, because in most homes the only place for a fireplace was an outside wall. But a great American recognized this problem and invented a means to heat a mid-1700’s home. A free-st... read all »
Reflections of 2007
One of my most fun things is to get are Christmas cards from people who compress the past year into “moments to remember”. As I write this article I am trying to recall as much as I can remember that happened to my ‘church’ family this past year. My disclaimer is this, it is as accurate as I am capable of recalling…but we all know I can hide my own Easter eggs. We baptized 11 souls into Jesus and counted 3 persons returning to the f... read all »
The Christmas Watch
It’s that time of the year again. I am amazed at how quickly the Christmas Season comes each year, since I’ve grown older. As a kid I thought Christmas would never get here. I called it the “Christmas watch”. I would get all pumped up right after Thanksgiving from all the decorations, music, candies, and commercials on TV. Christmas would arrive and just as quickly it would be gone, letting me down to agonize for another year in waiting. At m... read all »
Light or Not
We have grown so spoiled by our modern conveniences, haven’t we? Think about electricity. It has only been in usage in our homes for a little over a hundred years. Not very long in the overall history of mankind, and yet we never notice it … till it goes off! Back many years ago, when people were first getting electric services delivered locally, two neighbors were trying to decide if they even wanted to have it in the their homes. One family said th... read all »
